Guilt and shame run through the whole drama. Loving someone is a happy thing, even if it is blind love. However, in this drama, Phaedra’s love makes all people around her feel ashamed, including herself. Love changed from a good thing to a beginning of pain and distress. Phaedra didn’t mean to hurt anyone, she was just too ashamed to express herself. But this love was so strong that it made all people suffer. When she heard about Aricia and Hippolytus, she envied their love was without the consciousness of guilt, while herself was just a shadow, an outsider. In El Cid, the protagonists’ love encountered obstacles and difficulties, but they could fight for love and break through the obstacles together. But for Phaedra, her love was a monologue from the beginning, not even with the right to fight for happiness.
